E-Cigs for Lent: Give up Tobacco for 40 Days

Every January many a smoker resolves to give up tobacco once and for all. The vast majority of them find themselves smoking again before Valentine’s Day. If this sounds like you, there’s a second chance to make good if you are willing to dedicate yourself to a tobacco free Lent.

For the unchurched, Lent is the 40 days preceding Easter in which Christians prepare themselves for the coming holiday by giving up something important to them. The thing about Lent is that it is observed by both believers and nonbelievers alike. Nonbelievers observe it simply as a time of self-improvement and personal renewal.

The Lenten season for 2013 began on February 13, but that still leaves you plenty of time to get on board and make the next few weeks count.

Try the Gradual Approach

Studies have shown that most attempts to quit smoking fail because they are too sudden and there is no plan in place to resolve the cravings and stressful circumstances that inevitably result. Electronic cigarettes can be a bridge by offering you a gradual approach. If you would like to try giving up tobacco for the remaining days of Lent, here’s how the process works:

  • commit to giving up just one cigarette per day and vaping instead for the next three days
  • after three days, up that one cigarette to two – continue that for another three days
  • by the seventh day you’re ready to double that again to four cigarettes

We suggest three-day increments but you can choose whatever is comfortable for you. The point is, with the passing of every increment you will be doubling the number of tobacco cigarettes you substitute. Every time you can vape instead of smoking you are increasing the chances you can finish Lent without tobacco.

Don’t Get Discouraged

Going 40 days without tobacco is no easy task, that’s for sure. But do your best to not get discouraged. It may be that you get to the end of the season and you are still only able to cut your tobacco consumption in half. So what? Half is better than none, no matter how you slice it.

You can also take comfort in the fact that whenever you vape you are choosing not to inhale the toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke. That lack of smoke is also protecting your loved ones from second hand exposure. In other words, there are plenty of good things you can hang your hat on whether you are a part-time vaper or you manage to leave off tobacco completely.

In order to make the remaining days of Lent a bit more affordable, we might suggest you start with a disposable e-cigarette and see how it goes. One disposable offers the equivalent of 1 to 2 packs of tobacco cigarettes depending on your smoking habit.

If you made an unsuccessful resolution in January to cut down on your tobacco use, take advantage of the Lenten season and try again. But this time try it with electronic cigarettes.
