Media Slowly Catching on to E-Cigs

A recent article published in the Winston-Salem Journal had a headline that read “E-cigs shifting from ‘fad’ to ‘here to stay’.” While the article contained most of what we have come to expect from news outlets, it is important to note that the media is slowly catching on to the reality of electronic cigarettes.

The title of the February 17 story really says it all. Newspapers, online news outlets, magazines, and other sources of information are coming to realize that electronic cigarettes are indeed here to stay. However, they are behind the curve when it comes to the idea of the fad. E-cigarettes stopped being a fad years ago. They are a real and viable alternative to tobacco and approved nicotine replacement therapies.

Industry Booming in the U.S.

The last official sales numbers from 2011 suggest an e-cig market in the U.S. in excess of $500 million. However, estimates for the coming year suggest the industry could be worth $1 billion or more thanks to the 2.5 million e-cig users in this country. That number is staggering when you consider how difficult it is to convince smokers to try anything different.

Even more impressive is the fact that while local and state smoking bans are slowly being altered to include e-cigarettes, that’s not stopping smokers from purchasing and using them anyway. Far too many have found them to be an excellent tobacco alternative to give up vaping now.

The Appeal of the Electronic Cigarette

There are many things about the e-cigarette that appeal to the average tobacco smoker. Right at the top of the list is the price. With the average cost of a pack of tobacco cigarettes now approaching $7, it is getting ever more costly to continue the tobacco habit. In New York State, smokers pay almost $12 per pack. With disposable e-cigs, you save between 25% and 30% depending on your brand. A rechargeable model can do even better at about 70% annually.

Second is the convenience. Vapers who normally have to step outside to smoke find their e-cigs are welcome in most places. Workers who can vape at their workstations are more productive; bar patrons are happier to be able to stay inside with their friends; and taxi drivers do not have to spend all day trying to find a place they can pull over and quickly have a smoke before the next call comes in.

Third is the fact that electronic cigarettes eliminate tobacco smoke. And when you eliminate smoke, you are also eliminating the “used ashtray” smell, the stained teeth and fingers, the ugly “smokers’ face”, and the risk of endangering others with second hand smoke.

It is true that e-cigarettes are no longer a fad; they are a product that is here to stay for the long haul. According to analysts like Wells Fargo Securities’ Bonnie Herzog, it is only a matter of time before the product overtakes traditional tobacco in the U.S. Until that day comes, we are happy just to know the media is slowly catching on.
